This course is part of the Information Security Degree and the Network Security Certificate.

The National Security Agency's IAM Training has been incorporated into this course. Mike Andrew instructs the IAM portion is IAM certified. This training alone usually costs between $700.00 and $800.00, but there is no additional cost to the student. The IAM is instructed at the beginning of CIS 278 over the course of two weeks or four class meetings. Attendance of all sessions is mandatory for participants to receive a certificate of completion for the IAM portion.

In addition, this course covers planning, configuring and implementing firewalls, proxy servers, and the use of content and Web filtering software and devices. The use of log consolidation tools will also be covered.

Several different types of firewalls will be used and configured in class - both software based and appliance.

  • Authentication using a firewall
  • Configuring Bastion Hosts
  • Firewall configuration and implementation strategies
  • Identifying, isolating, and containing security incidents
  • Implementing a VPN
  • Implementing security features in routers and switches
  • Implementing security for dial-in access
  • Implementing stateful and stateless packet filters
  • Troubleshooting common firewall problems
